Can I paint an entire truck with rubberized undercoating?

I'm sanding and repainting my old truck this week. I sprayed some of that paintable rubberized undercoating on the lower parts with the plan to paint over it later. Then I got thinking... it goes on really nice, I like the texture and the solid black color... couldn't I just cover the whole truck with it, and forget about the paintjob?

The one obvious downside I can see is that it would be a huge pain in the ass to sand down the truck again later if I needed to. (It won't matter, the 'paint' job will last longer than the truck anyway) Are there other reasons to not do this? I ask because I haven't seen anyone else do it, ever.

I had actually thought about this in a similar fashion, do the undercarriage, up the sides a bit, and the interior. Haven't had the money to go through with it yet but I don't see why you couldn't...

I did it to my 1960 Willys CJ-5. I applied it with a roller brush. Didn't have to worry about scratches after that! It did, however, turn kind of green with pollen in the spring -- hard to wash off. But who cares. If you want a tough finish that will keep stuff from rusting, then go for it.

*turns out it's flammable. Careful around the hot parts. :-)

I have seen it colored before, big UF Gator logo in the bed of a truck, another with red flames....

Dunno about flammable but it'll probably melt.

I did the whole bottom of my last 2 trucks. Removed both bumpers and sprayed the bottom 10 inches (up to the first moulding). No rock chip, no rust, looks fine.

The real rhino liner apparently adds about 50 lbs of weight to the truck. I suppose that says something about how thick it is sprayed on (I think it goes on about 1/4" deep). I'd be doing it thinner (no need for 1/4 of rubber on my hood or doors).

I see the spray cans at the hardware store in Black and Beige. Beige is about $2 more per can ($12). I figure 10 cans I can do the whole thing. Beige might show dirt less.

Did you just do the exterior, or go around the doors and such? I have some concern about what happens when one coated surface is in contact with another coated surface (such as a door and the door frame) for a long time. Also, how hard was it to clean? I mean is it going to look like complete crap in a couple months once the salt and sand are all over it?

Anyway I know I can spray this stuff on a hell of a lot quicker than real paint, so I might just go for it. I have another few days to decide since I've only sanded down half the truck so far. Of course, if I end up doing this then I'm going to feel stupid about the extra time I'm spending preparing that extra smooth surface.

And you did this without painting over it later (like I plan to)? If so, does it discolor in any way?

The rhino lining stuff is done like that all the time in off road vehicles. I was thinking about doing my interior (of my Jeep) with it, and the fenders cause my kids always climb on them getting in.

Ended up using WingWalk instead. ...the stuff they use on steps on aircrafts. Works GREAT.

Caveat:

Don't cover up ANY SCREWS OR BOLTS that you need to remove in the future. You will have scrape off that rubberized cover FIRST before being able to remove them.

Been there, done that. Screws up the look and is difficult to repair.

Try LINE-X before rhino.

It is not as thick and rubbery, and is a much tougher finish to scratches.

It also does not get that really dull look as much as the rhino does either. Also, things can slide on it (inside bed).

You can FORGET anything EVER sliding ANYWHERE with rhino. Hated that part of it.

Here in texas LOTS of deer lease vehicles are covered in Line-x. Many are even colored. The green actually looks pretty good.

Re: Can I paint an entire truck with rubberized undercoating?

Well, I sprayed the front just now, around the lights and grill. I like the look of it.

Line-x sounds pretty nice but I can't get it around here, at least not on short notice. I'm going to be using the black Rocker Guard spray cans at Canadian Tire. They're only $8 each. It seems tough enough; I stabbed part of the rocker panel that I sprayed yesterday with the dull end of a pen and it scuffed the coating, but didn't get through it, same deal with the bottom edge of a spray paint can. If it can take that, it should be able to take a few stones flying and doors dinging.

I'll post some pictures when it's all done.
